Wineries of the Durbanville Wine Route RUSSO Russo Wines is a family-owned boutique winery in the Durbanville Wine Valley. Henk, Terèsa Rossouw and their children live and work on this exceptionally beautiful small wine farm on the outskirts of Durbanville. Having bought the land, they found the soil and the climate perfect for the production of red grapes and planted the vineyard in 2004. The Vineyard is small - about 4 Ha - and is worked mainly by hand. It is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The sea breeze from the Atlantic Ocean and a light South Easter cool the vineyard down in summer and allow the grapes to ripen slowly. Every bunch of grapes is individually selected and harvested by hand. Making Russo wines is a family affair. and all the members are involved. Terèsa is the wine maker and administrator while Henk tends to the vineyard and the marketing. Terèsa use quality grapes and traditional methods to create an elegant Bordeaux-style blend. The personal involvement in every aspect of the wine making process is reflected in the character of the wine. The family produces only one blend in the classic Bordeaux style. This surprisingly smooth and very elegant wine displays superb up front flavours and a delightful, long finish. It has more body and character than the typical French Bordeaux, but is less complex and with a lower alcohol content than the average South African blend.
