![]() Wineries of the Durbanville Wine Route KRONENDALKronendal is a small, 2ha property located on Westerdale Road on the outskirts of Durbanville. Owned by Piet and Magdaleen Kroon, it was initially destined to become a nursery, but water shortages dictated otherwise. The soil has excellent water retention capacity and provided the perfect solution - a dryland vineyard. The vines were planted in 2003. The vineyard of 0.6ha consists of Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Tempranillo and Viognier. Magdaleen personally tend the vineyard (spraying, pruning, suckering etc.). The grapes are hand-picked at the crack of dawn and then meticulously sorted. With the exception of Shiraz and Viognier, the cultivars are fermented and aged separately. Natural fermentation is allowed and extended skin contact improves the tannin profile and colour. The wine is made as gently as possible with hand punch downs at 4-hourly intervals, the use of a traditional basket press and without the use of pumps. Ageing is done in a combination of new and old small French oak barrels (24 months) and the wine spends a further 6 months in bottle prior to release. With the maiden vintage the sorting process took so much longer than anticipated, that all family and friends (with promise of beer and pizza…), had to roll up their sleeves and help. Their passion and dedication into the early hours of the morning inspired the name of our blend - Mirari (Latin: To wonder at). ![]() ![]()
